The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) announced the global semiconductor industry sales situation for April 2023 on Tuesday (6th) local time.
Data shows that global semiconductor sales in April decreased by more than 20% compared to the same period last year, but there is still a slight increase compared to March. In April 2023, the total global semiconductor sales were $40 billion, a decrease of 21.6% year-on-year, but a slight increase of 0.3% compared to March, continuing the upward trend. Based on revenue, SIA accounts for 99% of the US semiconductor industry and nearly two-thirds of non US chip companies.
Industry forecasts show that global semiconductor sales are expected to experience a double-digit decline in 2023, but a double-digit rebound with an annual increase of nearly 12% is expected in 2024.
On a monthly basis, both China and Japan saw growth in sales in April, with monthly increases of 2.9% and 0.9%, respectively. However, Europe decreased by 0.6%, the Americas decreased by 1%, and Asia Pacific/other regions decreased by 1.1%. Monthly sales are compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics Organization (WSTS) and represent the moving average over three months.
Compared to the same period last year, except for Europe, which grew by 2.3%, all other regions showed a decline. Japan saw a decrease of 2.3%, the Americas saw a significant decrease of 20.5%, Asia Pacific/other regions saw a decrease of 23.9%, and China saw a sharp decline of 31.4%.
SIA President and CEO John Neuffer said, "The global semiconductor cycle is still in a slump, exacerbated by economic weakness. However, sales in April have rebounded for two consecutive months, indicating a sustained rebound in the coming months."
He also stated that the latest industry forecast shows that global semiconductor sales will experience a double-digit decline this year and achieve a strong rebound in 2024.
The WSTS Spring 2023 global semiconductor sales forecast shows that global annual sales are expected to reach $515.1 billion this year, a decrease of 10.3%. It is expected to rebound to $576 billion in 2024, an increase of 11.9%, and move towards a record high.
