Following TSMC's announcement of its 2nm mass production plan, Samsung Electronics also announced that it will surpass the world's leading semiconductor foundry TSMC by mass producing cutting-edge 2nm technology.
According to BusinessKorea, on June 26th local time, at the Samsung wafer foundry forum 2023 held in Silicon Valley, California, Samsung Electronics announced the specific schedule and strategy for mass production of 2nm process semiconductors.
According to this strategy, Samsung Electronics will begin mass production of 2nm process semiconductors in 2025, with a focus on the mobile sector. Subsequently, the plan is to expand to high-performance computing (HPC) processes in 2026 and to automotive processes in 2027. Compared with 3nm, the performance of 2nm process semiconductors has improved by 12% and power efficiency has increased by 25%. Samsung also confirmed that it plans to start mass production of the 1.4 nm process as planned in 2027.
"Samsung Electronics will continue to innovate GAA transistor technology, which is the next generation transistor most suitable for AI semiconductors, to ensure market dominance," said Choi Si young, President of Samsung's OEM Business Unit, in a keynote speech
In addition, Samsung plans to enhance its OEM business competitiveness by expanding the application of advanced 2nm processes and establishing the MDI alliance. Through the MDI alliance, Samsung will provide IP partners with information on the foundry processes required to develop advanced semiconductor design assets (IPs). These IP partners will develop IPs optimized for Samsung's foundry processes and provide them to domestic and foreign fabless customers. Usually, IP development and validation take at least two to two and a half years. However, through the MDI alliance, Samsung seems to be shortening the time from semiconductor development to mass production from approximately three and a half to five years to one and a half to two years. Zheng Jifeng,
Samsung's strategy is to collaborate with IP partners to proactively acquire core IPs required in artificial intelligence, GPUs, HPC, automotive, and all mobile fields, and attract new fabless customers.
